Modules Overview

Module One (Taster Module)

Introduction to Counselling Skills

This module introduces you to the importance of the therapeutic relationship and active listening skills. Practice in small groups builds your confidence in your skills development. This is supported by progressing your knowledge of basic theory, and your understanding of how concepts relate to practice.

This first module can be taken as a ‘taster’ module.

Module Two

Developing Personal Awareness

We introduce you to the importance of personal growth and self-awareness when using counselling skills. A variety of methods will help you develop reflective skills and self–understanding as well as help develop your understanding of others. Opportunities to practice listening skills in small groups continues.

Module Three

Developing Counselling Skills and Theory

This module builds on your learning in the Introduction module and introduces you to a wider range of counselling skills within a 3-stage framework for helping others. It draws from a range of counselling theory to explore features of the helping relationship and professional issues. Continuous skills practice in small groups, and feedback helps you to develop your counselling skills and trainees are supported to become reflective practitioners.

Module Four

Common Personal Themes

You explore typical issues that lead people to seek help, and the different implications, methods and resources available when supporting them in a listening helper role. As well as having a range of visiting expert speakers you will look into a topic that interests you.

Placement Experience

We recommend that all students on our Foundation and Diploma courses have an outlet, outside the classroom, to practice the skills they are learning.

For the Foundations of Counselling course this can be any activity that involves you in listening to people where there is some emotional content to the conversation.

This might be as part of your work role, potentially with family and friends (although they may not welcome you counselling them!) or in a voluntary role.

Operations Director Sally Lee supports students to find a placement, and liaises with Placement Providers.
